Amr Abdel Wahab, head of the Astronomical Society of Mahmoud Mosque (ASMM), has been calling for people since 2013 to “Look at the Sky.” His invitation is an attempt to attract attention to astronomy and contemplation of the universe at a time when Egypt is still experiencing social and political chaos since the revolution.

Wahab started with astronomy as a hobby. His studies took him far from his village in Minya province, where lights block the view of the stars.

His mother’s numerous questions about the names of constellations, planets and meteors awakened his interest in astronomy, and he would read to find answers. He then enrolled in the Faculty of Sciences at Cairo University and moved to Cairo to join the ASMM, whose management he took over in 2011.

In 1881, late Egyptian scientist Mostafa Mahmoud established Egypt's first association for astronomy and space lovers. He believed that astronomy originated in Egypt with the ancient Egyptians. The association founded a center to educate Egyptian society and organize training sessions for space aficionados.
