US targets Iranian officials with human rights sanctions
The Treasury Department imposed sanctions on 10 Iranian individuals and one entity connected to the protest violence.
WASHINGTON — The US Treasury Department unveiled new human rights sanctions Monday on several senior Iranian officials and what it described as a slush fund for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The sanctions mark the Biden administration's latest effort to hold Iran accountable for its violent crackdown on the anti-government protests, which erupted in mid-September over the death in morality police custody of 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini.
The Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced human rights sanctions on the IRGC Cooperative Foundation and five of its board members. The foundation, also known as Bonyad Taavon Sepah, was previously designated by the United States under counterterrorism and nonproliferation authorities.
In a news release, OFAC described the foundation as “a key economic pillar of the IRGC” that manages the Revolutionary Guards’ investments and funds much of its suppression.
