Senior China delegation in Iran to discuss 'strategic partnership,' economic ties
Iran hosted a Chinese delegation on Tuesday and Wednesday in a step to solidify a 2021 strategic partnership agreement, but can the two countries’ partnership weather the upcoming Donald Trump presidency?
A high-level Chinese delegation arrived in Tehran on Tuesday to meet with senior Iranian officials for discussions on economic ties and strengthening the two countries’ 25-year strategic partnership agreement.
The Chinese delegation, led by China’s Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing, met on Wednesday with a delegation of senior Iranian officials led by Iranian First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref. The delegations discussed “expanding bilateral ties," according to Iran’s state news agency IRNA.
Guoqing also met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday. IRNA reported that during the meeting, Pezeshkian "emphasized that Iran is seriously pursuing the implementation of a comprehensive agreement with China."
Prior to the delegation’s arrival in Tehran, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said that the visit was to be carried out within the framework of Iran and China’s Comprehensive Strategic Partnership agreement and will focus on "implementing the relevant parts" of the agreement.
