Iran is sending four military ships to the United Arab Emirates, a top commander said on Monday, in what would be an unprecedented encounter between the two countries’ naval forces.

Rear Adm. Alireza Tangsiri of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps navy said that four vessels from the IRGC and the Iranian navy will depart for a meeting with the UAE navy. Tangsiri said the visit will be the first by Iranian naval forces to the UAE, the IRGC-affiliated Tasnim news agency reported.

Tasnim and other semi-official Iranian media did not provide further details on the meeting, including when the ships will arrive. The UAE did not immediately comment.

Tangsiri added that Iran plans to hold joint exercises with Iraq in the near future.
