Cyberattack strikes Iranian bank with ties to IRGC: What we know
The hacker group that claims to be behind the attack said it targeted the bank over its role in financing Iran’s ballistic missile and nuclear programs.
An Iranian bank with ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps came under a cyberattack claimed by an anti-regime hacker group on Tuesday as the exchanges of fire between Israel and Iran rage on for a fifth day.
What happened: The hacker group, Predatory Sparrow — also known by its Persian name, Gonjeshke Darande — claimed responsibility on Tuesday for the cyberattack targeting Bank Sepah, saying it destroyed all of the bank’s data.
“Bank Sepah was an institution that circumvented international sanctions and used the people of Iran’s money to finance the regime’s terrorist proxies, its ballistic missile program and its military nuclear program,” the group said in a statement posted on its social media pages.
“This is what happens to institutions dedicated to maintaining the dictator’s terrorist fantasies,” the group stated, thanking the “brave Iranians whose help made this operation possible.”
