US sanctions 4 ICC officials over Israel case
The sanctions against four of the court's officials come as Israel prepares for a military offensive in Gaza City.
WASHINGTON — The Trump administration has imposed sanctions on additional members of the International Criminal Court, escalating its campaign against the tribunal for what it views as bias against Israel and the United States.
The State Department said Wednesday that the measures were in response to the ICC’s years-long investigation into alleged crimes committed by US military personnel in Afghanistan as well as its issuance of arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister, Yoav Gallant.
In November 2024, a panel of ICC judges determined there were “reasonable grounds to believe” Netanyahu and Gallant bore responsibility for the war crime of “starvation as a method of warfare” and other “inhumane acts” in the Gaza Strip.
As the United States and Israel are not party to the Rome Statute, the international treaty that established the court in 2002, neither recognizes its jurisdiction.
