Iran to host Pakistani interior minister as border security, trade talks advance
Iran is finessing its relations with Pakistan, seeking to bolster border security and increase trade in response to sanctions.
Iran will host Pakistan’s interior minister on Tuesday for talks on border and regional security as the two countries inch closer to a free trade deal.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi will hold talks with Iranian officials in Tehran on border security, counterterrorism and regional developments, Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency reported, citing comments made by Pakistan’s ambassador to Iran, Muhammad Mudassir Tipu.
Tipu made the remarks Monday at an event in Tehran marking Kashmir Black Day, which commemorates the region’s struggle for self-determination. Kashmir remains a disputed territory between Pakistan and India.
The ambassador added that Iran and Pakistan are finalizing a free trade agreement. Tipu said the deal will focus on facilitating the direct exchange of goods and eliminating financial barriers, though he said its full implementation could take several years, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported.
