Likud Knesset member Miki Zohar sounded quite emotional during a Feb. 19 interview in which he compared the assassination of former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin to “what they’re doing to the prime minister.” He made the comment to Radio Haifa a day after the Case 4000 scandal exploded with a wave of arrests that scooped up people close to Netanyahu.

The media has described Case 4000 as the most serious of all the Netanyahu scandals. Shaul Elovitch, who owns controlling interest in the telecommunication giant Bezeq, allegedly received hundreds of millions of shekels in the form of an easing of regulations by the Ministry of Communications. In exchange, Netanyahu would receive favorable coverage on the Walla website, which Bezeq owns.

The feeling that morning among Netanyahu’s hardcore supporters in the Likud was that the noose around the prime minister’s neck is getting tighter and that the police will not rest until they bring him down. This stems from the narrative that Netanyahu has etched deep in their minds. He has been so successful in getting this message across that Zohar went as far as using Rabin's assassination to argue with stunning sincerity that the recent events are an attempt to depose Netanyahu through undemocratic means.

What happened next was no less ridiculous. Zohar presented a conspiracy theory claiming that the former head of the Department of Investigations, Yoav Segalovich, is colluding with the chairman of Yesh Atid, Yair Lapid, “to take out the prime minister undemocratically.” This theory is based on the testimony that Lapid gave in Case 1000 at the request of the police and might result in Netanyahu being charged with a crime.
