Tarek Bitar, the judge probing the 2020 Beirut blast has dropped bombshell charges, implicating Lebanon's former prime Minister Hassan Diab, and senior security officials in the blast that ravaged the Lebanese capital and left more than 200 killed.

The charges coming on the heels of an economic collapse in Lebanon prompted more protests on Tuesday.

According to Reuters, Bitar has charged Diab, former interior minister Nouhad Machnouk and former public works minister Ghazi Zeaiter with homicide with probable intent. Also among those charged, Reuters added, are Prosecutor General Ghassan Oweidat, the head of Lebanon's domestic intelligence agency Major General Abbas Ibrahim, and former army commander Jean Kahwaji, and other current and former security and judicial officials.

Beirut Judge Tarek Bitar resumed the investigation into the port blast on Monday.
