TEL AVIV — The destruction of an Iranian-controlled precision missile facility in western Syria, attributed to a daring Israeli commando raid, marks an unusually high-profile operation for Israel.

Axios and the New York Times reported that the operation targeted a facility where unguided rockets are turned into precision missiles.

The Sept. 8 operation would have made a Hollywood producer proud. Under a smokescreen of air bombardments, members of the Shaldag commando unit rappelled from helicopters and raided the secret facility deep underground. Its location made it almost impenetrable to the bombings that have destroyed hundreds of Iranian weapons convoys and depots in Syria over the years. The Israeli fighters retrieved documents, computers and other equipment and blew the site up. Two hours after it began, the operation was over.
