Israel sees opportunity, favors federalism in post-Assad Syria
Israeli officials are not yet sure whether the fall of the Assad regime and other recent events in Syria are positive or negative developments for the region.
TEL AVIV — Amid the downfall of the Assad regime in Syria, Israel is examining its options for severing Iran's access to Lebanon via Syrian territory.
Israel is coordinating with the United States regarding the rapid changes in Syria, hoping the Americans will use their leverage to influence the rebels who have assumed control of the government in Damascus.
Will US get involved?
"If the United States does not aggressively enter the vacuum that has now been created between Damascus and Beirut, this historic opportunity will be missed," a senior Israeli diplomatic source told Al-Monitor on condition of anonymity. “This will not happen without active moves to influence and use leverage over those who will now take over Syria. They will need help and are open to suggestions."
