Following the collapse of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad's government at the hands of a rebel offensive led by Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), Mohammed al-Bashir announced Tuesday that he was appointed Syria’s caretaker prime minister until March 2025.

On Tuesday, Bashir and members of HTS’ governmental arm, the Syrian Salvation Government (SSG), met with cabinet members of the outgoing Assad government.

Following the meeting, Bashir told Al Jazeera that he had "invited members from the old government and some directors from the administration in Idlib [SSG] and its surrounding areas in order to facilitate all the necessary works for the next two months until we have a constitutional system to be able to serve the Syrian people.”

The SSG began governing Idlib in 2017 after negotiations with other armed groups in Syria’s northwest region. The group governed around 4 million people and maintained 11 ministries, local departments, security authorities and a religious council guided by Islamic law.
