Iran mulls lifting ban on women driving motorcycles: What to know
Women face a number of restrictions in Iran, among them an effective prohibition on riding motorcycles.
A bill currently under consideration in the Iranian parliament would allow women to operate motorcycles, an official said Tuesday, following years of public debate over the issue.
Kazem Delkhosh, a deputy assistant to the presidency’s parliamentary affairs office, announced that a bill was submitted to amend an article of the law on handling traffic violations, Iranian media reported.
At present, the law specifies only that men can obtain licenses to operate motorcycles. The lack of a legal basis for women to operate motorcycles is dangerous, said Delkhosh.
“In the event of a traffic accident involving women driving motorcycles, the damages caused to other vehicles or pedestrians are not covered by insurance,” he was quoted as saying in local media. “This poses serious financial risks not only for women motorcyclists but also for all road users.”
