In a move that consolidates his family’s grip on eastern Libya, Khalifa Hifter, the powerful commander of the self-styled Libyan National Army, has appointed his son Saddam Hifter to the second-highest post in his eastern stronghold.
What happened: On Monday, the LNA’s General Command officially announced Saddam's appointment as deputy general commander.
The announcement described the move as in line with Khalifa's “2030 vision to develop and enhance the overall performance of the armed forces.”
“This assignment will be followed by a number of important assignments over the next few days,” the General Command added.
