Egypt and Russia signed a nuclear fuel supply agreement and marked the installation of a new vessel at the Dabaa nuclear plant in Egypt on Wednesday, signaling strengthened energy cooperation between the two countries.

What happened: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Russian President Vladimir Putin participated in a videoconference in which they witnessed the installation of a reactor pressure vessel at the first unit of the Dabaa nuclear power plant, Egypt's first such facility. The two countries also signed a nuclear fuel purchase order pertaining to the unit, Egypt’s state-owned news outlet Al-Ahram reported. Neither Egypt nor Russia specified the terms of order.

Dabaa is located along Egypt’s Mediterranean coast, about 170 kilometers (105 miles) west of Alexandria.

A reactor pressure vessel is a structure that contains nuclear reactor coolant, which is used to remove heat and transfer it to generators.
