Kuwait arrests 6 over alleged Hezbollah plot to assassinate leaders
Kuwait said the individuals were plotting to carry out assassinations against officials, while Qatar and the UAE have also announced the dismantling of networks allegedly tied to Hezbollah and Iran’s IRGC.
Kuwaiti authorities announced on Wednesday the arrest of six individuals accused of working with Hezbollah to plot assassinations, marking the latest sign of pressure against the Iran-backed Lebanese group in the Gulf.
What happened: Kuwait’s Interior Ministry said it had arrested five citizens and one non-Kuwaiti individual whose citizenship had been revoked. The ministry alleged the six were linked to Hezbollah and were “planning to carry out assassination operations targeting state symbols and leaders.”
The ministry added that it had identified 14 fugitives outside the country who are allegedly tied to the cell. The group includes Kuwaitis, Iranians, Lebanese and individuals whose citizenship was revoked, and the search is ongoing.
The statement did not explicitly say that the stateless individuals were previously Kuwaiti, but the monarchy has notably stripped around 50,000 people of their citizenship in recent years over what it says are security and forgery concerns.
