Kuwait unveils Iran IRGC infiltration plot, arrests 4: What to know
According to Kuwaiti authorities, four suspects arrested earlier this month after attempting to enter the country illegally via the sea confessed to belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and planning attacks against Kuwait.
Kuwait announced on Tuesday that four people arrested earlier this month after allegedly attempting to enter Kuwaiti territory by sea to carry out attacks in the Gulf country belonged to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
What happened: Kuwait’s Ministry of Interior said in a statement that the four suspects confessed during interrogation to their affiliation with the IRGC and admitted that they were tasked with infiltrating Bubiyan Island, in the northwestern corner of the Persian Gulf near the Iranian coast, aboard a fishing boat to carry out hostile acts against Kuwait.
The four suspects were identified as Amir Hossein Abdul Mohammad Zarai and Abdul Samad Yadollah Ghanavati, both colonels in the Iranian navy; Ahmad Jamshid Gholam Reza Za al-Faqari, a navy captain; and Buri Mohammad Hossein Sohrab Faroghi Rad, a first lieutenant.
According to the statement, the suspects were arrested during an operation by Kuwaiti armed forces on May 1. Clashes resulted in the injury of a Kuwaiti soldier. Two other suspected IRGC members managed to escape.
