Iran's Ghalibaf holds talks in Oman on Strait of Hormuz: What to know
The US-Iran memorandum of understanding signed last week calls for Iran and Oman to hold talks on the future administration of the strait.
The head of Iran’s negotiating team, parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, held talks in Muscat on Tuesday on managing the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy choke point that has become a focus of recent US-Iran negotiations.
Ghalibaf met with Oman's Sultan Haitham bin Tariq on Tuesday, with the two discussing the future management of the waterway that separates Iran and Oman. A joint statement following the meeting said that the two agreed to establish a “joint working group” between the Iranian and Omani foreign ministries “to reach agreement on future administration of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the services that will be provided in this regard and the costs associated with them in accordance with international standards.”
The statement added that Iran and Oman also “agreed to hold discussions with the littoral States in the region, and with any other relevant parties.”
After arriving in Muscat on Monday, Ghalibaf and Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi. The officials discussed ways to “support peace efforts, enhance de-escalation and stability” according to a statement from Oman's Foreign Ministry.
