A court in Kuwait has sentenced a Kuwaiti national to life in prison after convicting him of spying for Iran and its proxy, the Lebanon-based Hezbollah group, as the Gulf country continued to fend off Iranian drone and missile attacks on Friday.

What happened: On Thursday, Kuwait’s State Security Court of Appeal overturned a 10-year jail term issued to the defendant after he was found guilty of cooperating with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Lebanese Hezbollah.

According to court documents cited by local media outlets, the defendant traveled on several occasions to the Iranian city of Qom, where he met with IRGC and Hezbollah leaders and received training to handle weapons and operate drones in preparation for attacks on Kuwait’s national security and sovereign interests.

In a separate case, the same court overturned a previous ruling that sentenced a woman to three years in prison for inciting sectarian strife via WhatsApp and Snapchat. The court suspended the sentence and acquitted her of charges of promoting the ideology of Hezbollah.
