Iran hits US Embassy in Baghdad, threatens UAE after US' Kharg Island strike
Iranian officials threatened Saturday to hit US-linked energy infrastructure in the region if Iran’s own installations are struck. The warning came after President Donald Trump announced late Friday that the US had carried out strikes against “every military target” on Iran’s Kharg Island export hub, though oil infrastructure on the narrow island was spared.
“However, should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with the free and safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Iran confirmed Saturday that the strikes did not hit oil facilities on the island, which accounts for around 90% of Iran’s crude exports and roughly 4% of global output. The Islamic Republic has previously said that attacking the island would be a red line.
Meanwhile, Iran continued to pummel Gulf states, Iraq and Israel on Saturday. A fire broke out near Fujairah port in the United Arab Emirates after the interception of an Iranian drone. The UAE’s foreign ministry said nine ballistic missiles and 33 drones were fired at its territory on Saturday. Iran’s military threatened to strike cities in the United Arab Emirates, accusing them of hosting US launch sites used in attacks on Abu Musa and Kharg islands.
Bahrain also reported dozens of projectiles fired at its territory.
Footage from the Associated Press and the BBC showed a strike on the US Embassy in Baghdad, though the mission has not commented. The Iran-backed Kataib Hezbollah militia said it targeted a C-RAM interception system at the embassy.
After Axios reported late Friday that Israel is considering a large ground operation in Lebanon, Lebanese health authorities said that 23 people had been killed in Israeli strikes so far on Saturday.
