Trump lashes out at NATO as Israel says it killed Iran’s Larijani
US President Donald Trump lashed out at NATO countries on Tuesday over their apparent refusal to join a maritime mission in the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran continues to hold under a de facto blockade.
Trump said the US protects NATO but that the member states “will do nothing for us,” and called out Japan, South Korea and Australia. He added, “WE DO NOT NEED THE HELP OF ANYONE” in a Truth Social post. The US president has been pressuring members of the alliance to help secure the strategic waterway, though no NATO countries have formally agreed to participate in operations there.
Senior Emirati official Anwar Gargash suggested on Tuesday that the UAE could play a role in securing the strait.
The French shipping giant CMA CGM said on Tuesday that it has opened up emergency land routes in an effort to avoid the waterway.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that Israel killed Iran’s top security official, Ali Larijani, in a strike in Tehran Tuesday as well as the commander of the Basij paramilitary. Larijani headed Iran’s National Security Council, the top security body in the country.
The director of the US National Counterterrorism Center, Joe Kent, announced his resignation on Tuesday over the war, marking the first by a Senate-confirmed US official to step down this term. He blamed “Israel and its powerful American lobby” for dragging the US into war, adding that Iran posed no immediate threat.
In Lebanon, President Joseph Aoun said that Israeli strikes targeting Hezbollah are undermining security in the country after two Lebanese soldiers were killed in a strike earlier in the day. Lebanon declared Hezbollah’s military activities illegal earlier this month after the Iran-backed group resumed its rocket fire against Israel.
