Gulf leaders look East to expand trade

The Gulf Cooperation Council and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) held their second joint summit in Kuala Lumpur. For the first time, China also joined the forum.

On Tuesday, Gulf leaders convened at a summit in Malaysia to expand trade ties eastward. The meeting comes two weeks after US President Donald Trump began his tour of the Gulf. On the first leg of his trip in Riyadh, at the behest of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Trump vowed to lift sanctions on Syria. On Friday, the Trump administration made good on his promise, announcing immediate sanctions relief on the war-torn country. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's low-cost carrier flyadeal joined the growing list of airlines that plan to resume flights to Syria.
