View from China: New Syria, old problem
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, formerly the leader of rebel Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), is still on the UN’s terrorism sanctions list, as is HTS. The US is pushing to change that, but China is not convinced.
Hi readers,
Syria's new president is set to address the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) next month, and the United States is trying to make that happen. But there’s a catch.
Ahmed al-Sharaa, formerly the leader of rebel Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), still appears on the UN’s terrorism sanctions list, as does HTS. The Trump administration has launched a diplomatic push to change that, arguing that it is time to lift the decade-old designations. Some UN Security Council members agree, but China is not convinced.
