Damascus hospitals' intensive care units full with coronavirus patients

The United Nations recently said there are more COVID-19 cases in Syria than the government has reported.

Hospitals in the Syrian capital, Damascus, are struggling with an increase in COVID-19 cases.

Intensive care units at public hospitals in the city reached full capacity Thursday. The lack of space for people seriously ill with the coronavirus has led doctors to transfer patients to other provinces, The Associated Press reported.

The Ministry of Health recorded 149 new infections Thursday in addition to 10 deaths. However, some observers believe the actual number of COVID-19 cases is much higher in Syria than the government is reporting.

“Given the limited/insufficient testing across Syria, it is likely the actual number of cases far exceeds official figures, with significant numbers of asymptomatic and mild cases in particular going undetected,” a recent UN report says.
