At least 20 people are dead after a fire ripped through a clothing factory on the outskirts of Cairo on Thursday.

Fifteen fire trucks were called to the scene of the fire, which left at least 24 people injured in the industrial area of Obour, a town some 22 miles north of the Egyptian capital. Videos uploaded to social media showed crowds of people gathering helplessly as plumes of gray and black smoke engulfed the building.

The exact cause of the blaze isn’t yet known, according to a statement released by the government on Thursday, but Agence France-Presse reports that the state prosecutor has assigned a team to investigate the fire.

Ahram Online reports that a “preliminary inspection suggests that a gas leak from chemical materials might have caused an explosion leading to the eruption of the deadly blaze.”
