A Republican congressman on Friday introduced a bill focused on human rights in Iran ahead of the Persian new year.

The Iran Human Rights and Accountability Act introduced by Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina would require the US government to investigate alleged human rights abuses committed by the Islamic Republic. The bill would require a report to be issued on wealth obtained via corruption by Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, a determination into whether Iran and allied militias have committed war crimes in Syria and more.

“This bill, introduced on the eve of the Iranian New Year of Nowruz, which marks the beginning of spring, may hopefully be the beginning of a new season for the people of Iran,” Wilson said in a press release.

Nowruz, which begins Saturday, is a festival that welcomes the arrival of spring. It is celebrated by Iranians, Kurds and other people in Eurasia, the Middle East and elsewhere.
