Palestinian president to visit Turkey

The delayed Palestinian elections, reconstruction in Gaza and Israel will be among the subjects discussed between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is set to arrive in the capital Ankara today, Friday, and remain in the country for three days following an invitation from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, according to the Palestinian news outlet WAFA.

Erdogan and Abbas will discuss the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Turkey-Palestine relations, reconciliation between Palestinian groups and the delayed elections in the Palestinian territories, according to Turkey’s official Anadolu Agency.

Erdogan is a vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause, in line with his embrace of populist causes in the Muslim world. Unlike many other Muslim states, Turkey has diplomatic relations with Israel, though relations have soured over the past decade there is considerable anti-Israel sentiment in Turkey.

Turkey recently signed a security agreement with the Abbas-led Palestinian Authority. Turkey will train Palestinian security forces with a focus on terrorism and financial crimes.
