Japan’s tourism authority opened an office in Dubai today.

The Japan National Tourism Organization’s office in the United Arab Emirates’ largest city is its first in any Middle Eastern country. The head of the office said that it will focus on tourism exchanges with the UAE and other Gulf countries, the official Emirates News Agency reported. The news was confirmed by Dubai’s media office.

“We aim to contribute to the further development of tourism exchange between Japan, the UAE and the wider GCC,” said Tomoko Kikuchi, referring to the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Japan has deep economic ties with Gulf countries, and imports the vast majority of its oil from GCC states. There are already hundreds of Japanese companies present in Dubai. Japan’s SoftBank has invested in Israeli high tech in recent years and Tokyo agreed to import Egyptian fruit last year after considerable negotiations.
