Turkish and Georgian border forces conducted a joint drill today aimed at deterring smuggling and irregular migration.

Georgian Border Police and the 25th Brigade of the Turkish army took part in the exercise. The soldiers simulated operations to arrest illegal migrants and prevent the smuggling of cattle across the border. Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a statement that the purpose of the exercise was to share experience and improve Turkish-Georgian cooperation on border security.

Georgia is located in Caucasus region on the Black Sea and borders northeast Turkey. The Eurasian country is a former part of the Soviet Union and also borders Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia.

Turkey has increased its military cooperation with Georgia recently. The two countries along with Azerbaijan conducted five days of joint military exercises last month. Iran is concerned about their increasing cooperation, especially because of Israel’s military support for Azerbaijan.
