Israeli citizen killed in West Bank outpost shooting
The attack occurred near the Palestinian city of Nablus at a settlement that is not approved by the Israeli government. Two students were also injured in the so-far unclaimed attack.
An Israeli man was killed in a shooting in the West Bank today.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported shots fired at around 9 p.m. local time. Israeli media subsequently reported that the shooting took place in the Homesh outpost in the northern West Bank. A man named Yehudah Dimentman from the nearby settlement Shavei Shomron died of wounds sustained in the shooting. Two other men who were students at a Jewish yeshiva were injured, according to reports.
Israel has built thousands of Jewish settlements in the West Bank since taking the territory from Jordan during the 1967 war. Most of the international community considers the settlements illegal, though Israel disputes this. The majority of the West Bank population is Palestinian, and Israeli settlers and Palestinian residents regularly clash in the territory.
The Homesh outpost is one of many informal dwellings that are not sanctioned by the Israeli government. Many residents of the outposts are devoutly religious Jewish nationalists.
