After Turkish media reported that an American diplomat was arrested in Turkey last month on suspicion of selling a fake passport, the US State Department on Wednesday denied that the detained individual is a US diplomat.

“We are aware of the detention of a U.S. citizen in Turkey,” a State Department official told Al-Monitor in emailed comments. “We are providing appropriate consular services.”

"The individual is not a U.S. diplomat," the official added.

The Istanbul Security Directorate identified the individual by his initials D.J.K. and said he worked at the US Embassy in Beirut.
