Several Kuwaiti embassies in Europe urged Kuwaiti citizens to return home last night due to the omicron variant of COVID-19.

Kuwait’s embassies in Germany, Italy and Spain advised Kuwaitis to return home due to rising cases of COVID-19 and the threat of lockdowns and travel measures in the countries, the official Kuwait News Agency reported.

Spain and Italy are both averaging more than 1,000 COVID-19 cases per million people a day, a substantial increase from the hundreds a day per million people in early December. Germany is averaging around 300 cases per million people a day, down from its historic high of nearly 700 cases per million people in November, according to Our World in Data.

Countries around the world are reporting increases in COVID-19 infections due to the emergence of the omicron variant. Health experts have yet to determine how dangerous and transmissible the variant is compared to its predecessors, though some doctors believe omicron may be milder.
