Another repatriation flight brings Egyptians stuck in Ukraine home

Thousands of Egyptian students were in Ukraine at the start of the Russian invasion. The conflict has forced many to flee to other eastern European states.

More Egyptian citizens who have fled Ukraine flew back home Friday.

Air Cairo flight SM 3605 departed Warsaw Chopin Airport at 9 p.m. local time, according to the airport’s flight log. The passengers were Egyptian citizens who escaped the war in Ukraine by entering Poland, the state-owned Al-Ahram reported.

Why it matters: There were 6,000 Egyptians in Ukraine at the start of the Russian invasion, most of whom were students. The war forced them to flee the country. Egypt has repatriated around 550 of its citizens via Poland, Hungary and Slovakia, according to local media.

Many foreigners have reported facing racism at borders leaving Ukraine, including Africans and Middle Easterners.
