An explosion in central Istanbul on Sunday killed at least six and wounded 81, Turkish authorities said. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described the explosion as a “treacherous attack.”

The blast, which hit the busy touristic area of Istiklal Street near Taksim Square, took place around 4:20 p.m. local time, Erdogan said.

Two of the victims died at nearby hospitals where they were taken after the explosion, he added.

Authorities “continue their efforts to establish the perpetrators of this treacherous attack,” Erdogan told journalists in a televised address, speaking before his departure for Bali for the G-20 summit.
