Turkey: Support for EU on rise as trust of US, China, Russia remains low
A recent survey reveals an increase in favorability for the EU and NATO in Turkey, while perceptions of the United States, China and Russia continue to falter.
ANKARA — Public support for the European Union has risen sharply in Turkey since 2019, a survey showed earlier this week, while support for China, Russia and the United States is decreasing.
The report, released on Wednesday, reveals notable increases in support for the EU and NATO, while trust in other global powers continues to erode.
The Washington-based Pew Research Center released its report on Wednesday based on a poll of 1,049 Turkish adults conducted between Jan. 29 and March 11, 2024. According to the survey, 46% of Turks hold a favorable view of the EU, a remarkable rise from 34% in 2019. The unfavorable view of the EU fell to 50%, down from 55% five years ago, highlighting growing positive feelings about the bloc despite the country’s full membership negotiations with the EU remaining at a standstill since 2018.
“The share of Turks with a favorable view of the EU is up 12 points since 2019. And a majority of Turks (56%) favor their country becoming a member of the EU,” the report stated.
