ANKARA — Turkish prosecutors on Thursday launched an investigation into the alleged circulation of counterfeit US dollar banknotes after several exchange offices and banks halted trading of the currency.

The investigation into the alleged printing and circulation of counterfeit banknotes was launched by Istanbul’s chief public prosecutor's office, Turkey’s public broadcaster TRT reported.

Turkey’s Central Bank said it had prepared an expert report on the counterfeit banknotes, which was shared with the Banks Association of Turkey (TBB) and other relevant institutions. “In addition, the necessary guidance has been provided to take measures against counterfeiting within the technological infrastructure,” it said in a statement.

The TBB said, “Necessary checks and updates are being carried out on the currency counting machines, counterfeit currency detection devices as well as ATMs, in a bid to combat counterfeit currency and prevent counterfeit banknotes’ circulation.”
