An Israeli man was arrested on suspicion of espionage and arson, allegedly carried out on behalf of Iran, the Shin Bet and Israeli police announced in a joint statement Monday.

Alexander Granovsky, from the town of Petah Tikva in central Israel, is expected to be charged in court later this week, the statement noted.

The statement stopped short of identifying who Granovsky was spying for, referring only to "foreign entities." However, both Haaretz and Ynet, citing Israel Police sources, reported that he was allegedly recruited and directed by Iran, with the initial contact made through the messaging platform Telegram.

According to Monday’s statement, a joint investigation by the Shin Bet and the Police Lahav 433 National Crime Unit uncovered that Granovsky had been in contact with "foreign terror operatives" since November and is suspected of carrying out multiple assignments at their direction.
