As Iran set to receive Trump's letter, China to host talks on nuclear program
China will host a trilateral meeting with Russia and Iran in Beijing Friday to discuss Iran's nuclear program, amid renewed US efforts to renegotiate a new deal.
China announced on Wednesday that it will host a meeting with Russia and Iran at the deputy foreign ministers' level later this week to discuss the Iranian nuclear file, marking the latest sign of strengthening ties between the three nations. The announcement comes as Iranian reports indicate that Tehran is set to receive a letter from US President Donald Trump on Wednesday through a UAE official.
What happened: Speaking at a regular press conference in Beijing on Wednesday, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Chinese Executive Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu will chair the meeting due in the Chinese capital on Friday, with the participation of Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Ryabkov Sergey Alexeevich and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei confirmed the upcoming meeting, telling a regular press conference in Tehran on Wednesday that the talks will focus on the latest developments related to his country’s nuclear program and the removal of sanctions.
The three parties will also discuss other issues of mutual interest, including the latest regional and international developments and cooperation within the frameworks of BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, according to Baqaei.
