Meet Eli Sharvit, Trump critic and Netanyahu's outsider nominee to lead Shin Bet
In a surprise move, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has nominated former Israeli naval commander Eli Sharvit to become Shin Bet chief despite his lack of intelligence experience.
Former Israeli naval commander Maj.-Gen. (res.) Eli Sharvit has been tapped to head the Shin Bet internal security agency after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired Ronen Bar last week.
Netanyahu announced Monday he picked Sharvit for the job, but for the nomination to become official, it must be approved by the Senior Appointments Advisory Committee. Israel's highest court also still needs to consider the petitions submitted against Bar's sacking, scheduled for April 8, meaning that Netanyahu theoretically still has at least another week to change his mind.
Al-Monitor’s Ben Caspit reported that senior Likud members are pushing Netanyahu to revoke the nomination over Sharvit's support of the 2023 movement against the Netanyahu government's judicial overhaul plan.
