Turkey detains 5 in alleged Iran spy ring as Syria tensions brew: What we know

The spy bust comes amid diplomatic strains between Turkey and Iran that surfaced after a rare rebuke of Tehran by Turkey's top diplomat.

ANKARA — Turkish authorities have detained five people suspected of spying on military bases and other critical locations on behalf of Iranian intelligence, in a rare bust of an alleged Iranian spy ring amid growing tensions between Ankara and Tehran. 

The suspects were rounded up in simultaneous raids in Istanbul and the Mediterranean provinces of Antalya and Mersin, according to Turkey’s private Demiroren News Agency and other media outlets on Friday.

The detainees were allegedly gathering information on military bases and strategic areas in Turkey, as well as critical locations abroad, and passing it on to Iranian intelligence services.

The reports did not provide further details on the suspects or the information allegedly obtained.
