WASHINGTON — The war in the Gaza Strip has been sidelined for most of the first 100 days of Donald Trump’s presidency, despite campaign promises of a quick resolution to the conflict.
The ceasefire Trump took credit for on the eve of his inauguration has failed to hold, as Gaza has been subject to a renewed Israeli air-and-ground campaign that local health officials say has killed more than 2,300 Palestinians since March 18.
Fifty-nine hostages languish in Hamas captivity, fewer than half of whom are still alive, and the Palestinian territory is again hurtling toward famine because of an Israeli blockade that’s prevented the entry of humanitarian aid and commercial goods for nearly two months.
