As talks with Iran appear to have reached an impasse, President Donald Trump said Monday that the alternative to a nuclear deal would be "very, very dire."

TEL AVIV — US President Donald Trump struck a pessimistic tone Monday when asked about nuclear talks with Iran, saying, "They're not there," and arguing that "the alternative is a very, very dire one."

Trump, speaking to reporters at the White House, continued that the Iranian delegation had given the Trump administration its thoughts on a recent US proposal, which he called "unacceptable."

"They don't want to give up what they have to give up," he said, adding, "We can't have enrichment; we want just the opposite." Trump said that the next round of talks will take place on Thursday, while noting that the Iranians are "tough negotiators."

The comments came hours after US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke over the phone on Monday about the ongoing talks between Washington and Tehran.
