Iran security chief visits Iraq, Lebanon as Baghdad weighs pro-Iran militia law
Ali Larijani, who was recently appointed to head Iran’s top security body, has embarked on visits to Iraq and Lebanon as Baghdad faces US pressure to contain Iranian-backed groups.
The head of Iran’s top security body, Ali Larijani, is on a landmark visit to Iraq and Lebanon on his first regional tour since his appointment to the position last week.
Beginning the first leg of his tour in Baghdad, Larijani signed a joint memorandum of understanding on security issues with Iraq’s national security adviser, Qasim al-Araji. Iraqi Prime Minister Shia al-Sudani attended the ceremony, Iran's semi-official Mehr News Agency reported.
Larijani was appointed last Tuesday as secretary of the Supreme National Security Council — Iran’s top decision-making body on defense and foreign policy.
