A grenade attack on a facility linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in the western province of Kurdistan has left two service members dead and three others wounded, according to Iranian state media. 

What happened: The incident took place late Monday on an IRGC base near the city of Sarvabad in Iran’s Kurdistan province. Iran’s state news outlet Press TV reported that the victims included a cleric identified as Ali-Reza Valizadeh and Ayyoub Shiri, a member of the IRGC-affiliated Basij militia. 

Iranian media outlets described the incident as a terror attack and the IRGC provincial division called the perpetrators “agents of the global arrogance,” adding, “The martyrdom and wounding of these valiant IRGC members is further proof of this truth.”

Iran’s western border regions, including the Kurdistan and Kermanshah provinces, have long been the site of intermittent clashes between Iranian security forces and Kurdish separatist or opposition groups. Tehran has repeatedly accused such factions of launching cross-border operations from Iraq’s semiautonomous Kurdistan region.
