ANKARA — Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan urged Iran to pursue negotiations with Washington in a phone call with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, on Wednesday, a Turkish Foreign Ministry source told journalists. The source added that Fidan has also been in contact with US officials amid mounting tensions.

During his phone call with Araghchi, “Fidan stressed the need for negotiations to alleviate the current regional tensions,” the source said.

The call marked the second such contact between the Turkish and Iranian foreign ministers within 24 hours, amid Ankara’s growing unease as US President Donald Trump intensifies threats against the Islamic Republic.

Trump on Tuesday called for Iranian protesters to seize state institutions, pledging support but stopping short of elaborating on what form that assistance would take.
