Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps tested new technology in a drill on Tuesday, constituting the third such exercise in the past two weeks as tensions with the United States mount.

What happened: The IRGC's ground forces conducted live-fire operations at unspecified sites in southern Iran as well as islands in the Gulf to boost security along Iran’s southern shores, state media outlets reported.

The drill reportedly utilized new weapons, though no details were provided, and the IRGC’s Madinah Munawwarah Base in southern Iran was used in the exercise.

Also on Tuesday, Brig. Gen. Seyyed Mohammad Hosseini was appointed head of the IRGC’s special forces division Saberin, state media reported. Hosseini previously commanded the 110th Salman Farsi Special Forces Brigade.
