Meet Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, IRGC-vetted figure at center of US talks
Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has emerged as one of the Islamic Republic’s most visible figures amid the conflict.
With the war in Iran approaching the one-month milestone, parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has emerged as a central political figure, and reports on Monday suggested he could be in contact with the United States.
Without naming him, US President Donald Trump said that envoy Steve Witkoff is in contact with a "top person" in Iran.
Israeli outlets identified that person as Ghalibaf. An Israeli official told Axios Monday that mediators are working to organize a potential meeting in Islamabad later this week between Ghalibaf and other Iranian representatives and Witkoff, Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner and possibly Vice President JD Vance.
Following Trump's statements, Ghalibaf wrote on X, “No negotiations have been held with the US, and fake news is used to manipulate the financial and oil markets and escape the quagmire in which the US and Israel are trapped.”
