ANKARA — Turkey is in talks with Iran to secure safe passage for 11 Turkish-owned ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz as Iran continues its de facto closure of the key waterway, Turkish Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu said on Wednesday.

Uraloglu said that 14 Turkish-owned vessels remain at sea in the Gulf. Three of them, including power-generation ships assigned to specific missions, have not requested departure because they are continuing operations. It is unclear whether their activities have been affected by the conflict.

Passage through the strait is effectively subject to approval by Tehran, which restricted it dramatically in response to the war that began on Feb. 28.

“Talks are ongoing to secure the departure of the remaining vessels. No evacuation has been possible so far,” Uraloglu told journalists at the parliament. He didn't elaborate on the nature of the talks.
