Iraq arrests deputy oil minister in anti-corruption push

The arrest of Adnan al-Jumaili marks a second signification step against corruption by Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi’s government amid growing pressure from the Trump administration.

Iraqi authorities arrested a senior oil official over corruption allegations as Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi strives to deliver on pledges to crack down on graft amid domestic and US pressure.

What happened: Deputy Oil Minister for Refinery Affairs Adnan al-Jumaili was arrested on Saturday for “siphoning funds” from refineries in Baiji, Maysan, al-Shuaiba and al-Dura as well as financing political parties and other illegal practices, Communications Minister Mustafa Sanad said in a statement. 

Photos circulating on Iraqi social media purportedly showed Jumaili in handcuffs alongside dozens of firearms allegedly seized from his home. Local media reported that he was arrested in Saladin province, north of Baghdad.

Jumaili was appointed deputy oil minister by former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani in early 2025.
