The warning comes as Secretary of State Marco Rubio says Washington remains open to negotiations with Tehran.

WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump threatened on Wednesday to order the US military to destroy Iranian civilian infrastructure in response to any future attack on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

“From this point forward, any time the Islamic Republic of Iran shoots at a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, whether it be by Missile, Rocket, Drone, or any other device or weapon, the United States will bomb and destroy ONE BRIDGE OR POWER PLANT, including those located next to, or in, the Capital City of Tehran,” Trump wrote on his social media site Truth Social on Tuesday.

The threat marks a further escalation in the months-long war, in which Iran has continued missile and drone attacks on commercial shipping in the strategic waterway and neighboring countries hosting US troops.

For 11 consecutive nights, US warplanes have carried out strikes against what officials have described as Iranian military targets largely along Iran’s southern coast in a bid to disable the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' projectile attacks into Hormuz.
